EARTH DAY-Scrap Yarn Baskets

Ever wonder what to do with all the scrap pieces of string, ribbon & yarn you collect over the course of all the art projects (if you are like me, you keep them thinking they may be useful someday....). It's not exactally recycling, but it is using something that might have otherwise been thrown away. Today we made baskets with our scrap pieces of string. I will post photos of the finished product when dry.

Need:
- scrap string/ribbon/yarn
- glue
- water
- bowl to mold basket around
- bowl for glue mixture
- plastic wrap

How To:
- wrap plastic wrap around bowl you are going to mold basket around.
- Make glue mixture (you will need a lot!). Pour glue in bowl & add a little water to thin it out slightly.
- Drip sting pieces in glue mixture and then start placing on bowl mold.
- The more pieces are overlapped, the strong the basket will be.
- Set out to dry (takes awhile).
- Once dry, you can remove from the bowl & peel away the plastic wrap.

EARTH DAY-Class Project

Well, not much going on today...we collected items around the daycare today to use in a class sculpture at the end of our earth day/recycling unit, I also sent notes home with the kids to have each child bring some items that would have been going in the trash from home to add to the project. Will post photos when the project is complete:)

EARTH DAY & RECYCLING BOOKS

We are really lacking books in this area, I have found a few from time to time in the dollar section at Target that actually aren't too bad as far as explaining how to help save the earth and how to recycle-however I don't think they will hold up for very long so I'm expecting to have to replace them soon...I did however come across a really good online story at We Give Books about recycling that is free to read.

EARTH DAY & RECYCLING SONGS

After much research, I was able to come across a few songs about the Earth and Recycling, so I made a little song book and we are working on these songs this week. Feel free to print the songs (link is below) laminate, cut apart & stick a ring on it so you can take them with you and practice durring down times:)

APRIL-All About Earth Day & Recycling

This months theme that I am doing with my kids is Earth Day & Recycling.
This month's blogs will be dedicated to activities to go along with this theme.

The first activity is a send-home activity (I like to send home at least 1 activity that my students can do at home with their families)

This activity is very simple, just buy seed packets (flowers, vegetables, whatever you like...) and print out these cute little cards to staple to the packets & send them home with them:)

**Reminder, all my printables will always be free, but please remember they are only to be reproduced for education purposes.
